Rebecca Prince-Ruiz: Churchill Fellow 2015

Increasing awareness and concerns about the problem of plastic waste in Australia has helped Rebecca Prince-Ruiz (2015) grow the Plastic Free July challenge and establish it as a registered charity in 2017.

Plastic Free July is a behaviour change campaign which started in WA, 2011 with a handful of people to raise awareness of the the problems of single-use plastic and has grown to an estimated 3.4 million participants from 177 countries in 2018.

The Plastic Free July Foundation’s vision is a world without plastic waste and Rebecca attributes the successful establishment of the charity to many of the skills, relationships and understandings she gained from her Fellowship. Ben Martin (2015), Head of Digital Content at Seven West Media, is a Board Member of the Plastic Free July Foundation.

Plastic Free July is helping raise awareness of plastic waste and in 2018 an estimated 1.5 million Australians took the challenge
to be part of the solution.
